Tom and Jerry Drink Recipe

The Tom and Jerry drink is like your cool older cousin that you only see around the holidays. You could see them any time of year but you wont, just at the holidays for some reason. Tom and Jerry’s have nothing to do with the cartoon and are a Holiday staple from Buffalo, NY to the Upper Midwest. Maybe its the long, cold, dark winters that drive the popularity of this rich, cozy, thick as a sweater, alcohol fueled, winter warmer, or maybe its just that they’re darn good. Either way, grab some friends and enjoy my grandfather’s Tom and Jerry Recipe.

Ingredients

The Tom and Jerry drink is akin to eggnog and contains raw eggs. You’ll be able to find everything you need at your local grocery store… except the bravery to consume some raw eggs. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Eggs
  • Confectioners Sugar
  • Vanilla Extract
  • Cinnamon
  • Nutmeg
  • Baking Soda
  • Brandy
  • Dark Rum

How to make a Tom and Jerry Drink

First, grab two large mixing bowls, an electric mixer, and the needed ingredients. Separate your eggs, putting the yolks in one bowl and the egg whites in the other. Set aside the yolks while we focus on the the egg whites. Next, you’ll beat the egg whites until they form stiff peaks. This will take 8-9 minutes with an electric mixer, so you’re in for the long haul. Maybe you can get a friend to feed you a couple sips of your beverage while you’re working the mixer. If you’re beating by hand with a whisk, add a couple more minutes.

You have to keep them separated!

Once you have stiff peaks in your egg whites, slowly mix in the confectioners sugar until it is fully incorporated. Now you will turn your attention to the yolks. Give the yolks a slow whisk until they are completely broken and the entire bowl has a smooth watery texture. Then mix in the vanilla, cinnamon, a dash of nutmeg, the baking soda, 1 oz. of Brandy, and 1 oz. of Dark Rum until fully incorporated. Don’t worry, we will add more booze later.

Next, fold the egg yolk mixture into your egg whites. Mix it just enough to fully combine the two mixtures. You now have Tom and Jerry batter that can be used immediately or stored in the fridge for up to 24 hours.

How to Make Your Tom and Jerry

Get a bunch of water boiling, especially if you’re making these for a crowd. Once you’ve got the water boiling and your batter made, you will want to rinse your mug with boiling water to “warm it up”. Discard that water and add 1 ounce of Dark Rum and 1 Ounce of Brandy to each mug that you’re making up. Next add a large 1 to 2 tablespoon dollop of batter into the mug. Then pour hot water into the mugs until the batter has crested the top of the mug but not spilled over. Hit the top with a dash of Nutmeg and you’re ready to enjoy!
