To have a sandwich named after you is an honor that very few achieve. The man the Wallywich was named after was more than deserving of this honor…. Happy Father’s Day, Dad!
Father’s Day is a chance to celebrate the extraordinary fathers and father figures in our lives. Its a day to cherish the memories and lessons of our fathers, and a day to make new memories if we are lucky enough to have the opportunity. For those of us feeling the bittersweet reminders of fathers and father’s fathers we’ve lost, its a day to celebrate impact, legacies, wisdom, and love.
It’s also a great day to eat a gosh darn sandwich, like this massive party pleasing wallywich. It’s great for a gathering or picnic, but the real ones know the best way to have a wallywich is as a midnight snack after a night on the town.
What You’ll Need
The ingredients for this sandwich will be availabel at every major grocer. It should be pretty easy to find everything you need. It is not likely you’ll have the ingredients on hand, so make a list and plan on a pre party trip to the store.
- 2 loaves of unsliced Italian bread (Yes, two whole loaves! Sourdough or peasant bread can also be used)
- 8 ounces of cream cheese
- 1 cup of shredded cheddar
- 3/4 cup of sliced green onions
- 1/4 cup of mayonaise
- 1 tbsp of Worcestershire sauce
- 1 pound of sliced ham
- 1 pound of sliced roast beef
- 12-14 thinly sliced dill pickles (sandwich cut, get clausen’s)
How to make a Wallywich
This is a sandwich, people of all skills should have no problem putting this recipe together in minutes. Gather all of your ingredients, then get to work on cutting the loaves. Slice them horizontally to make upper and lower halves. Then dig out the bread until you’ve hollowed out all but a 1 inch shell of bread.
Next, finely dice your green onions then grab a mixing bowl. Combine the green onion, mayonnaise, Worcestershire sauce, cream cheese, and cheddar cheese. Use a butter knife, spoon, or spatula to spread the cheese mixture inside the hollowed out bread loaves. Be sure to coat both the top and bottom
Now it’s time to lay out the meats. layer the ham and roast beef on both halves of the loaves. Then lay down a layer of pickles on the bottom half. The next step is the most difficult of the entire recipe. Carefully flip the top halves onto the bottom halves then lightly press it all together. Grab some plastic wrap and wrap the entire sandwich up tight and throw it in the fridge for two hours.
To serve, place long toothpicks every inch and a half to hold everything together. Then slice the sandwich between the toothpicks, distribute to guests, and enjoy
